MONTPELLIER (FRA) - The 12th World Military Lifesaving Championship kicked off with great enthusiasm and a vibrant opening ceremony on May 18, 2024, at Palavas-les Flots, France. The event was graced by prominent figures including General Paul Sanzey, overseeing French military sports, and Commander Dimuthu Thissera from CISM, who emphasized unity and sportsmanship among the participating nations.
The competitions began in earnest on May 19 at Le Grau-du-Roi, featuring a variety of beach events such as the 2km Run, Surf Race, Board Race, and Rescue Tube Rescue Relay. A total of 144 athletes from 11 nations showcased their skills, with standout performances from individuals like France's Private Camille Julien and Spain's Private Jesus Pulido in the 2km Run, and France's Sergeant Margaux Fabre and Italy's Corporal Nicola Roberto in the Surf Race.
As the championships progressed, France demonstrated strong performance across several events, particularly in the Board Race and Rescue Tube Rescue Relay for both men and women. Notably, France's dominance was evident with victories in the Board Rescue Race by Sergeant Margaux Fabre and Private Elise Daudignon, and in the men's categories by Private Santxo Etcheverry and Private Jérémie Lahet.
The competition extended to the pool events at the Swimming Pool Angelotti in Montpellier from May 21 to May 23, culminating in intense finals. Italy's Lucrezia Fabretti shone in the women's 200m Obstacle and 100m Manikin Carry with Fins, while France's Tom Durager excelled in the men's 100m Manikin Carry with Fins. The team events were equally thrilling, with France securing multiple victories in the 4x50m Obstacle Relay and the Medley Relays.
The closing ceremony on May 23 celebrated the achievements of the athletes and praised the meticulous organization by the French Local Organizing Committee. Overall, the 12th World Military Lifesaving Championship was hailed as a resounding success, blending competitive spirit with camaraderie among nations, embodying CISM's motto of "Friendship through Sport."
