ECKERNFÖRDE (GER) - The 53rd CISM World Military Naval Pentathlon Championship was held from August 24 to September 1, 2024, in the scenic town of Eckernförde, Germany. This prestigious event brought together top military athletes from six countries—Brazil, Spain, Finland, Italy, Sweden, and Germany—to compete in a challenging series of naval pentathlon events, fostering both competition and camaraderie among the participants. The championship opened with an official ceremony at the Eckernförde naval base on August 25, attended by Commander Olaf Oertel, Mayor Iris Ploog, and CISM Representative Major Jan-Henrik Back, who emphasized the significance of military sport in promoting peace, security, and multinational cooperation.
The event included five rigorous competitions: the Obstacle Race, Lifesaving Swimming Race, Utility Swimming Race, Seamanship Race, and Amphibious Cross-Country Race. Early highlights included standout performances from Sweden’s Justina Lundberg, who won the women’s Obstacle Race, and Germany’s Janik Hoffmann, who claimed first in the men’s category. Brazil’s Tatiane Pereira de Souza and João Pedro Oliveira Farche also performed exceptionally, securing podium finishes across multiple events.
As the championship progressed, Brazil continued to dominate the standings, particularly in the women’s categories, with Tatiane Pereira de Souza winning the Lifesaving Swimming Race and leading in both individual and team rankings. Germany’s Janik Hoffmann emerged as a key competitor, winning several events and leading the men’s overall standings.
The Seamanship Race, held on August 29, further intensified the competition. Hoffmann secured another first-place finish, while Brazil’s Max Leal dos Santos and João Pedro Oliveira Farche took second and third, respectively. On the women’s side, Sweden’s Justina Lundberg outperformed the field, with Brazil’s Pereira de Souza and Michelle Clerc de Matos closely behind. By this stage, Brazil led the team classifications in both the men’s and women’s categories, with Spain and Sweden trailing.
The championship culminated with the Amphibious Cross-Country Race and Obstacle Relay on August 30 and 31. In the Amphibious Cross-Country Race, Sweden’s Justina Lundberg claimed victory in the women’s race, while Germany’s Janik Hoffmann continued his dominance in the men’s race. Brazil’s Ivanilson Soares de Sousa and Max Leal dos Santos also delivered strong performances, securing second and third places, respectively.
The final standings revealed Brazil’s dominance across both individual and team categories. Tatiane Pereira de Souza finished as the top female athlete with 5907 points, followed by Sweden’s Justina Lundberg and Brazil’s Fernanda Ferreira Angelo Grossi. In the men’s division, Germany’s Janik Hoffmann topped the rankings with 6183 points, with Brazil’s Max Leal dos Santos and Ivanilson Soares de Sousa taking second and third places.
The closing ceremony on August 31 celebrated the athletes’ exceptional performances and the spirit of friendship that had developed throughout the event. Major Jan-Henrik Back praised the athletes for their dedication and highlighted the role of CISM in fostering unity and peace through sport. He also thanked the German Armed Forces and the organizing committee for their efforts in hosting the championship.
The 53rd CISM World Military Naval Pentathlon Championship was a resounding success, showcasing military athletic excellence, fostering international cooperation, and leaving a lasting impact on both participants and spectators. Brazil’s outstanding team performance, combined with Germany’s individual successes, marked the event as a memorable celebration of skill, discipline, and unity.
