53rd World Military Naval Pentathlon Championship: a memorable finale in Eckernförde
ECKERNFÖRDE (GER) - The 53rd CISM World Military Naval Pentathlon Championship concluded with remarkable displays of athletic prowess and international camaraderie on August 30 and 31, 2024. The final two days of competition, featuring the Amphibious Cross-Country Race and the Obstacle Relay, showcased the exceptional talent of military athletes from across the globe.
On August 30, the Amphibious Cross-Country Race highlighted the competitive spirit of the athletes. In the female category, Sweden’s Justina Lundberg secured first place with a time of 11:51.3, earning 898 points. Brazil’s Tatiane Pereira de Souza finished in second place with a time of 12:00.9 and 879 points, while Fernanda Ferreira Angelo Grossi, also from Brazil, claimed third with a time of 12:52.7 and 775 points. In the male category, Germany’s Janik Hoffmann led with a stellar performance, finishing in 10:30.5 and accumulating 1059 points. Brazil’s Ivanilson Soares de Sousa followed in second place with 11:00.7 and 999 points, and Max Leal dos Santos, also from Brazil, took third with a time of 11:19.1 and 962 points.
The final individual standings revealed the impressive achievements of the athletes. In the female category, Brazil’s Tatiane Pereira de Souza topped the rankings with a total of 5907 points, followed closely by Sweden’s Justina Lundberg with 5838 points. Fernanda Ferreira Angelo Grossi from Brazil secured third place with 5519 points. Michelle Clerc de Matos from Brazil and Elisa Atger Hato from Spain rounded out the top five with 5483 and 5430 points, respectively.
In the male category, Germany’s Janik Hoffmann emerged as the top athlete with a remarkable 6183 points. Brazil’s Max Leal dos Santos followed with 5972 points, and Ivanilson Soares de Sousa also from Brazil, took third place with 5891 points. João Pedro Oliveira Farche and Tiago André Lindcoln Brasil, both from Brazil, completed the top five with 5794 and 5757 points, respectively.
The team results saw Brazil excel in both categories. The Brazilian women’s team topped the rankings with a total of 11426 points, while the men’s team achieved a dominant 23414 points. Sweden and Spain also performed strongly, securing second and third places in the female category, and Spain and Finland following Brazil in the male category.
On August 31, the Obstacle Relay events showcased the athletes’ teamwork and agility. In the female Obstacle Relay, Brazil’s team triumphed, followed by Spain in second place and Sweden in third. Italy’s team finished in fourth place. In the men’s Obstacle Relay, Germany’s team delivered an outstanding performance to win first place, with Spain in second and Brazil in third. Finland and Sweden completed the top five.
During the Closing Ceremony, Major Jan-Henrik Bäck, Official CISM Representative and CISM Board of Directors Member, delivered an inspiring speech. “It is a pleasure and honor once again to address you, this time at the Closing Ceremony of the 53rd World Military Naval Pentathlon Championship here in Eckernförde,” he stated. “At the beginning of the competition, I told that it would be a great competition. Now it is coming to an end and I can tell you for sure that it was an excellent competition, super results, joyful German hospitality, and most importantly, great friendship.”
Major Bäck highlighted the spirit of CISM, saying, “What CISM and all of you have created here and around the world is a unique opportunity that embraces our differences and ignores any differences. The miracle of CISM lies in its ability to draw strength and momentum from the very elements that might otherwise keep us apart.” He concluded, “These powerful tools of CISM serve to deliver to the world around us an undeniable message of peace. I would like to thank everyone assembled here today and congratulate you all for your devotion to sport and peace and for the discipline that got you here today.”
He also expressed gratitude to the event organizers: “A Championship like this cannot happen without our competitors, but you athletes could not do what you have done without the many people who contributed their time and their talents behind the scenes. Therefore, I would also like to send a special thank you to the Organizing Committee who has made an excellent job. We are proud to have Germany as a member in our great organization.”
The 53rd CISM World Military Naval Pentathlon Championship in Eckernförde has been a celebration of athletic excellence, unity, and international friendship. The impressive performances and the smooth organization have set a high standard for future events, making this Championship a memorable experience for all involved.
