Military wrestling at its best: highlights and results from the 37th WMC Wrestling
YEREVAN (ARM) - The 37th World Military Wrestling Championship in Yerevan, Armenia, has opened with electrifying performances across all categories, highlighting the exceptional skill and determination of military athletes worldwide. With participants from over 30 nations and robust media coverage, the championship has captured the attention of wrestling enthusiasts globally.
On Day 1, competitions in freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women’s wrestling categories delivered thrilling results.
In freestyle wrestling, the 57 kg category was dominated by North Korea’s Song Han Chong, who secured gold with a perfect record. Mongolia’s Munkh Erdena Dawaabandi earned silver, while India’s Shubham Shubham and Iran’s Veisi Mahdi shared the bronze. The 61 kg title went to North Korea’s Myong Kim Kvang, who displayed outstanding technique, with Armenia’s Sargis Begoyan taking silver. Bronze medals were awarded to Iran’s Rahimi Mahdi and Russia’s Amir Chamzyn. In the 65 kg category, Armenia’s Andranik Avetisyan thrilled the home crowd by clinching gold, while North Korea’s Jin Kim Kvang took silver. Iran’s Mahdi Palangvar Mohammad and Russia’s Dzhambulat Kizinov shared bronze. Kazakhstan’s Merizhan Ashirov reigned supreme in the 70 kg category, with India’s Sharwan Sharwan earning silver. Russia’s Inar Ketia and France’s Khamzat Arsamerzouv shared bronze.
In Greco-Roman wrestling, Armenia celebrated victories in the 60 kg category, with Suren Aghajanyan taking gold, and in the 67 kg category, with Gaspar Terteryan standing atop the podium. North Korea’s Ung Ri Se and Iran’s Chobakzan Ali claimed silver in their respective categories. Bronze medals went to wrestlers from Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and North Korea across these divisions. The 63 kg category saw Turkey’s Kerem Kamil securing gold with a dominant performance, while the USA’s Hafizov Eldar earned silver. Bronze went to Armenia’s Hrachya Poghosyan and Russia’s Sergei Emelin. Iran’s Abdi Amir triumphed in the 77 kg category, while Russia’s Sergei Stepanov took silver. Turkey’s Yanus Emre Basar and Armenia’s Ashot Khachatryan claimed bronze.
In women’s wrestling, Switzerland’s Svenja Jungo clinched the 50 kg gold, displaying remarkable resilience. Mongolia’s Byambasuren Munkhnaran earned silver, while Kazakhstan’s Svetlana Ankicheva secured bronze. In the 53 kg category, North Korea’s Hyang Kim Ji delivered an outstanding performance to take gold, with Armenia’s Elen Babajanyan claiming silver. Mongolia’s Ganbat Oyundari secured bronze.

Day 2 continued with equally riveting action, featuring bouts in freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women’s wrestling.
In freestyle wrestling, India’s Jaideep Jaideep electrified the audience by taking gold in the 74 kg category. Iran’s Hosseini Amir Hossein earned silver, while Turkey’s Fazil Eryilmaz and Armenia’s Hrayr Alikhanyan shared bronze. Mongolia’s Olonbayar Suldkhuu delivered a commanding victory in the 79 kg division, with Russia’s Mokhmad Nasirkhaev taking silver. India’s Chandermohan Chandermohan and Armenia’s Arman Avagyan shared bronze. Russia’s Arslan Bagaev showcased technical mastery to win the 86 kg category, while France’s Rakhim Magamadov took silver. Belarus’s Ilya Khamtsou and Kazakhstan’s Rustem Myrzagaliyev secured bronze.
In Greco-Roman wrestling, North Korea’s Chol Ro Yu triumphed in the 55 kg category, outclassing Armenia’s Tigran Minasyan, who earned silver. Iran’s Shamshiri Kiyanoush and Russia’s Viktor Vedernikov took bronze. Turkey’s Selcuk Can dominated the 72 kg category, with Iran’s Pour Isa Morteza taking silver. Russia’s Aleksei Kiiankin and Armenia’s Shant Khachatryan shared bronze. Russia’s Rafael Iunusov claimed gold in the 82 kg category, while Turkey’s Burhan Akbudak earned silver. Armenia’s Samvel Grigoryan and the USA’s Kamal Bey took bronze.
In women’s wrestling, India’s Jyoti Jyoti secured gold in the 55 kg category, with Mongolia’s Munkhbolt Dulguun earning silver. Kazakhstan’s Marina Sedneva claimed bronze. North Korea’s Son Il Sim showcased dominance to win the 57 kg division, while Mongolia’s Babanmunkh Otgontuya took silver. Hungary’s Galambus Ramona secured bronze. North Korea’s Jong Junae dazzled in the 59 kg category, earning gold, while the USA’s Abigali Nette secured silver. Romania’s Kateryna Zhydachevska claimed bronze. The USA’s Adaugo Nwachukwu excelled in the 62 kg division, taking gold with France’s Ameline Douarre earning silver. Switzerland’s Annatina Lippuner secured bronze.
