LUCERNE (SUI) - Bahrain emerged victorious in the cross-country running mixed relay race at the 2025 Military World Winter Games, delivering a stunning performance in ideal race conditions. The event was further highlighted by an impressive aerial display from the Swiss Air Force Patrouille Suisse.
The race began at a blistering pace, with Albert Rop (Bahrain), fresh off his individual gold medal, setting the tempo at the front of the pack. He controlled the opening leg before handing off in a strong position.
Austria’s Lena Millonig then took command in the second stage, demonstrating exceptional cross-country skiing skills to establish a promising lead for her team at the halfway mark.
But Bahrain was far from finished. Balew Birhanu launched a powerful third leg, battling fiercely with Krystian Zalewski (Poland) and Julien Le Cozler (France) to regain the lead. In the final stretch, Olympic champion Winfred Yavi delivered a spectacular anchor leg, surging past the competition to secure Bahrain’s triumph. Poland crossed the line in second, with France claiming bronze.
In the spirit of inclusivity, the 2025 Military World Winter Games also featured a relay event for para-athletes, including competitors with physical disabilities and PTSD. This event demonstrated the Games’ commitment to providing opportunities for all military athletes to showcase their determination and skill on the international stage.
With 25 nations competing, the mixed relay was more than just a showcase of world-class athleticism—it was a celebration of unity and sportsmanship. The 2025 Military World Winter Games once again underscored their mission of fostering camaraderie, teamwork, and international cooperation through the power of sport.
