LUCERNE (SUI) - Major General Stephan Christen is a man of action. When he was promoted to Brigadier on January 1, 2017, and took command of the Engineering/Rescue/CBC Training Division, he faced not only military challenges but also sporting responsibilities. Elite sports fell under his purview—a role that positioned him as a key figure in Switzerland’s successful bid to host the 5th CISM Military World Winter Games.
What began as an idea in 2019 became a reality in June 2021 when Switzerland was awarded the Games. Now, against the breathtaking backdrop of the snow-covered Alps, Christen reflects on the journey so far.
Engelberg has been transformed into a stage for both athletic excellence and military unity, and Christen is deeply moved by the effort behind it. “Without the support of the militia, this event would not have been possible,” he emphasizes.
He is particularly impressed by the dedication of those who have voluntarily remilitarized to contribute to the Games, despite no longer being on active duty. “The personal commitment is truly inspiring,” he notes. For many participating soldiers, this event is a unique opportunity—a rare moment where sports, camaraderie, and military service merge in an international setting.
Christen is unequivocal in his praise for the organization of the Games. “This event is flawlessly executed,” he says with pride. But the goal was never grandeur; rather, the vision was clear from the start. The CISM Military World Winter Games were designed not as an extravagant spectacle but as a model multisport event—climate-friendly, efficient, and true to Swiss tradition. “And that’s exactly what we’ve achieved.”
Yet, these Games mean more than just competition. They serve as a platform for fostering international military cooperation. “The camaraderie developing here among nations is simply outstanding,” Christen observes. Switzerland’s role as host is not just about logistics—it’s a demonstration of commitment to the global military sports community.
From a security policy perspective, the Games hold even greater significance. In an increasingly complex world, the connections forged through military sports extend far beyond the competition. They create bonds of trust, understanding, and collaboration—essential pillars for international stability.
