3rd CISM World Winter Games: Second day of competition

SOCHI (RUS) – Yesterday, February 26, the second day of competition of the 3rd CISM World Winter Games took place in Sochi (RUS). The spectators attended impressive performances from the Russian, Austrian and Italian athletes!

In Biathlon, the Austrian team composed of Zdouc, Innerhofer, Brunner and Komatz had to fight until the end of the race of the Mixed Relay (2x6km women & 2x7,5km men) against the French team (Varcin, Latuilliere, Jouty and Guigonnat). Austria finished the race with a 3,2 seconds lead ahead of France. Russia (Kaisheva, Nechkasova, Eliseev and Tsvetkov) finished on the 3rd step of the podium.

In sports climbing, Austria also dominated the men and women lead events: Schubert won the gold medal of the men event ahead of Skofic (SLO) and Bombardi (ITA) while in the women lead event, Jessica Pilz (AUT) defeated teammate Katharina Posch to win the gold medal. Mina Markovic (SLO) took the bronze medal.

In Alpine Skiing, Italia managed to put three athletes on the podium with the gold medal of Stefano Gross (1:30.82), the silver medal of Manfred Moelgg and Cristian Deville. Giuliano Razzoli (ITA) completed the Italian success with a fourth place! Indeed, Italia (Moelgg, Gross and Deville) won the gold medal of the team event. Germany (Schwaiger, Gratz and Dorn) is second while the Islamic Republic of Iran (Baha, Kia Shemshaki, Saveh Shemshaki) finished on the third place.

In Short Track, Arianna Fontana won its second title of the Games after her gold medal in the women 500m event on Friday. Yesterday, she managed to take the first place of the 1000m women event with a 0,059 seconds lead on Yang (CHN). Another Chinese athlete, Runyuan Wang, is completing the podium. In the men’s 1000m competition, the Korean Kim Sun Jin was the fastest athlete of the day and won the final A ahead of the silver medalist Yuri Confortola (ITA) and the bronze medalist Hongzhi Xu (CHN).

Finally, in the Ski Orienteering Middle Distance event, Russia confirmed its superiority with four medals out of the six distributed. Eduard Khrennikov (RUS) won the gold medal of the men event with a 2:58 seconds lead on Stanimir Belomazhev (BUL). The Russian Stepan Malinobskii is third. In the women’s event, Russia won another gold medal with Mariia Kechkina finishing first. Three minutes behind the winner, Tatiana Oborina (RUS) is second while the Bulgarian Antoniya Grigoriva took the bronze medal!
