Basketball: China crush Brazilians to claim first women's Games gold

WUHAN (CHN) - China trounced Brazil 93-65 to win the first gold medal in women’s basketball at a Military World Games on Saturday.

The Chinese went ahead in the first quarter and maintained their dominance throughout as a crowd of nearly 8,000 at Huazhong University of Science and Technology Optics Valley Gymnasium cheered their every move.

LI Meng, who scored 20 points during the match, was delighted with the victory.

“It’s an honour to compete at the Military World Games,” LI said. “All the training was worthwhile. Being on the court means that my coach believed in me.”

For ZHAO Shuang (CHN), the triumph was extra special as it will be her last. “I was very satisfied with the result as this is the end of my career,” the 29-year-old said.

In a nail-biting bronze-medal match, USA beat France 85-79 in overtime after being behind 32-46 after the second quarter.

In the last seconds of regular time Jala HARRIS (USA) hit a three-point shot to tie the game 71-71 to force game into five minutes of overtime.

Harris, who scored 24 points in the game, was elated to score the equaliser but insisted it had been a team effort.

“My team-mates put me in the right position to score,” said HARRIS. “I’ll give them all the credit.”
