WUHAN (CHN) - Although making its debut in aeronautical pentathlon, China was always going to be a tough opponent on home soil.
But few expected the host nation to sweep the medal table in the individual events.
In the men, LI RUI (5,322 points) won gold, LI Minghao the silver with 5,282 and YE Bangwu (5,170) the bronze.
The women were no less impressive across all six events (only scores from the top five went towards medals and overall rankings) with HE Haoqin (5,628 points) taking gold, CHENG Xin (5,413 points) the silver and WANG Jia (5,400 points) bronze after the final event, orienteering, at the Jiangxia District Tianzishan course.
Despite China's dominance overall, there were some notable exceptions in the individual events.
Ecuador's Augusto GUIZADO, who finished fifth overall, won the men's fencing, former international butterfly swimmer Mariana LAPORTE (BRA) the women's swimming and Spain's Eduardo CARRILLO proved the best shot with an air pistol in the men's shooting.
The Chinese men won the team event and finished with 15,781 points. Brazil took the silver medal, with 13,876, and Finland followed with 13,504.
The China women mined gold with 11,041 points, while Brazil was a distant second with 8382, and Norway third in 7831.
