SAN DIEGO (USA) - In an exciting start to the 14th CISM World Military Golf Championship, 103 military members hailing from 17 different nations teed off at the picturesque Admiral Baker Golf Course on October 3.
Nestled amidst the stunning landscape of Admiral Baker Golf Course, this event served as an excellent showcase for the United States Armed Forces. Rolling hills and clear blue skies provided a breathtaking backdrop as military contingents from 17 nations entered, accompanied by the melodic tunes of the Navy Band Southwest during the opening ceremony.
The flags of CISM and the host nation were raised to their respective national anthems before NBSD Commanding Officer Captain Robert A. Heely took the stage to extend a warm welcome to all participants.
Captain Heely expressed, "Naval Base San Diego stands as the largest U.S. Naval base in the Pacific, accustomed to welcoming foreign ships into our harbor. So, it's indeed a unique and equally thrilling experience for the base to welcome you to our shores, nestled deep in the San Diego Canyon."
Following Captain Heely's opening remarks, Mr. Steven Dinote, Armed Forces Sports Council Secretariat and U.S. Chief of Delegation to CISM, shared the rich history of CISM Golf and its California roots. He then introduced the Official CISM Representative, Zimbabwean Air Vice Marshall Simon Nyowani.
Nyowani remarked, "I feel deeply honored to officiate at the 14th World Military Golf Championship, hosted by one of the world's great sporting nations, the USA. Best of luck to all the competitors. You truly embody the CISM motto—'Friendship through Sport.' I wish you all an exceptional week."
Finally, Navy Rear Admiral Daniel Cheever graced the stage to officially declare the event open, prompting an enthusiastic applause from the crowd.
See you today for the first day of competition !
