Cartagena hosts 52nd WMC Orienteering with 27 Nations competing

CARTAGENA (ESP) – The 52nd World Military Orienteering Championship officially opened yesterday, October 17, at the scenic Plaza Mayor in Cartagena, gathering military teams from 27 countries. The championship, which began yesterday and runs until October 22, showcases not only athletic prowess but also cultural exchange among the participants.


The ceremony was presided over by Vice Admiral Victoriano Gilabert Agote, Admiral of Maritime Action (ALMART), representing the Armed Forces of the Murcia region and the Navy in Cartagena. The event was attended by distinguished civil and military officials, alongside special guests.


During the opening remarks, Cartagena’s Mayor, Noelia Arroyo, welcomed participants and highlighted the military values of sacrifice, effort, and dedication to others. She emphasized the importance of camaraderie, stating, “The competition that begins today exemplifies the spirit of friendship between nations and cultures, which is invaluable to the countries we serve.”

Colonel Steven Rosso, the Official CISM Representative, joined Mayor Arroyo in welcoming the military participants, further underlining the event's significance. To formally inaugurate the championship, Vice Admiral Gilabert declared, “I hereby declare the 52nd World Military Orienteering Championship of the International Military Sports Council officially open.”


CISM has entrusted the Spanish Armed Forces with organizing this prestigious championship, which brings together military teams from diverse nations, providing an exceptional platform for competition and cultural exchange. The Spanish Navy, under the auspices of the Superior Council of Military Sports, is responsible for the championship's organization and conduct.


Participating countries include Austria, Germany, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, China, Croatia, Ecuador, Spain, Estonia, the United States, Finland, France, Iran, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Oman, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, and Turkey. Competitors will engage in various orienteering disciplines, including middle and long-distance races and relays.

The beautiful city of Cartagena, with its rich history and natural surroundings, serves as the perfect backdrop for this championship. In addition to the competitions, participants will have the opportunity to explore the region's beaches and protected areas, as well as its cultural heritage.
