Athletics: Brazil toast double relay gold

WUHAN (CHN) - Sprint queen Rosangela SANTOS (BRA) was already ordering the drinks after leading her women's 4x100m relay team to victory and watching Brazil's men do the same at the Wuhan Five Rings Sports Center on Thursday.

SANTOS was level with China's GE Manqi when they picked up their fourth-leg batons but the 100m silver medallist had too much speed for her rival on the final straight.

"I knew that Manqi is a hard girl, so we tried to do our best to open it up so I could finish," SANTOS said. "We'll have a lot of caipirinhas, Coronas - that's our vacations now."

Moments later Paulo Andre OLIVEIRA led the men's 100m quartet to back-to-back golds for Brazil in a new Games record of 38.68 seconds.

FENG Bin underscored China's dominance of the Wuhan 2019 throwing events by taking gold in the women's discus. FENG sent her first throw to 64.83m, more than three metres further than the best effort of Fernanda MARTINS of Brazil in silver.

In the men's pole vault, Pawel WOJCIECHOWSKI (POL) broke a pole and damaged his finger in failing to break his own championship record of 5.81m. His successful clearance of 5.60m was 10 centimetres ahead of the rest and clinched his second Military World Games gold medal, following his success in 2011.

"It's pole vault, you need to keep your nerve and make sure that you can do it any time," WOJCIECHOWSKI said. "Here I needed to do it more carefully because it's October and I'm very tired. That's why I broke the pole."

In the morning session on Thursday, WANG Jianan won the men's long jump gold for China with a leap of 8.15m.
