35th WMC Men’s Volleyball – Teheran (IRI) – Opening Ceremony & Competition Day 1
TEHERAN (IRI) – The Opening Ceremony of the 35th WMC Men’s Volleyball took place in the morning of the 10th of September in the Azadi Volleyball Arena in Teheran. During 9 days (11 to 19 September), 10 countries will compete for the Gold medal of this WMC: China, Lebanon, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Pakistan, Palestine, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Venezuela, Zambia and of course the host country, the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Several personalities attended the Opening Ceremony: brigadier general Alireza Tamizi (Deputy Defense Minister for coordination of Iran), brigadier Mehr Ali BaranCheshmeh (head of the Physical Education department of the Armed Forces, Chief of Delegation of Iran to CISM and CISM Asia Vice-President), General Hyun-Soo Kim, CISM Official Representative, foreign military attaches residing in the Islamic Republic of Iran as well as other officials and delegates from the CISM.
After the Islamic Republic of Iran anthem was played, Brig-Gen BaranCheshmeh addressed the audience and welcomed the teams attending the 35th WMC Men’s Volleyball Championship. He also wished that the hosting of this Championship would be an important step for the development of the relations between the participating countries and that this games would take place under the CISM’s motto (“Friendship through sports”). Then Brig-Gen Alireza Tamizi, deputy Defense Minister for coordination, took the floor and highlighted the fact that the Islamic Republic of Iran considers sports as a way to develop unity, sympathy and constructive engagement; he also read the message sent by brigadier general Hossein Dehghan, the honorable Minister of Defense and Logistics of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Finally, General Hyun-Soo Kim, OCR of the 35th WMC Men’s Volleyball took the floor and expressed his hope that the organization of this WMC may contribute to the development of peace, unity and solidarity among the armed forces all around the world. He also expressed his gratitude towards Iranian officials for the organization of these competitions. Afterwards, the CISM anthem was played by a music unit while the CISM flag was raised in the arena and the participating teams proceeded to the parade in front of the podium. At the end of the Opening Ceremony, all the participants could attend a demonstration of ancient sports and martial movements performed by local groups.
