2nd WMC Women’s Basketball – Camp Pendleton (USA) – Update – Day 1

CAMP PENDLETON (USA) – The Opening Ceremony of the 2nd WMC Basketball Women’s took place yesterday in Paige Fieldhouse in presence Maj-Gen Kaiping Ma, member of the CISM BoD and Official CISM Representative for the competition, Steven Dinote, US Chief of Delegation, Major Tom Bellairs, Basketball PCSC, Brig. Gen. Kevin J. Killea, commanding general of Marine Corps Installations West and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and the 6 Chiefs of Mission of the participating countries. The Maj-Gen Kaiping Ma, CISM OCR, first took the floor to welcome the competitors. Then Brig. Gen. Kevin J. Killea delivered his opening remarks and declared the event officially open. Steven Dinote, US Chief of delegation also highlighted the importance of this WMC: Women in CISM have long struggled to get on the map. Last year France went ahead and hosted the first world championship and we had seven nations. We’re going to keep trying to get women’s basketball up and running”.

In the first game of the competition, Brazil faced Germany. And the less we can say is that Brazil justified its status as favorite by easily defeating a valiant German team 108-38. “Our team played quite well and we’re expecting the final victory, even though we know it won’t be easy.  But we trained a lot for this event. We even participated to a training camp in Argentina”, declared Major Guilherme Faria Da Silva, the Brazilian Chief of Mission. "We have to thank the Brazilian Ministry of Defense, the Sports Ministry but also the Armed Forces for their highly appreciated support”.

In the second game of the day, China defeated France at the end a very intense and tough game (64-49). France can only blame itself for this defeat. With more accuracy from the French side, the score would have been totally different.

USA played its first game of the tournament against their neighbors, Canada. And the US team achieved a real demonstration of their offensive and defensive strengths: the US players never gave a chance to Canada to compete with them. Final score: USA 82, Canada 25.

Tomorrow, 2 big clashes on the agenda: USA will face France while China will have to cope with Brazil. The third game of the day will confront Germany and Canada.

See you tomorrow!!
