February 18th, 1948. Headed by the French squadron leader Henri Debrus, militaries of France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Denmark founded in Nice, France, the “Conseil International du Sport Militaire – CISM”, with the idea of promoting peace through sport, bringing their respective Armed Forces together in sport events. This little seed has grown up, fortunately. We are now 134 member nations (for a while), with the same ideal of our founders.
To celebrate this day and bring to our memories the CISM foundation, it was created in 2006 the “CISM Day Run.” Much more than a jogging event, CISM Day Run recalls the spirit of our founders. This special day is held every year worldwide, and aims at promoting the practice of sports in the military context, bringing together all community of Sports, including Sports Federations, Olympic Committees, and other International Institutions in contact with the Armed Forces and Ministries of Defense.
Completely integrated to CISM principles, this event also intends to contribute to world peace and already became a tradition among CISM-family worldwide. Up to now, 88 member countries have already held at least once the CISM Day Run.
CISM Day Run includes short or long distance jogging, walking or skiing. The purpose is to disseminate the CISM motto, “Friendship through Sport”, among millions of soldiers of our 134 member nations, gathering in just one day, under the sport and peace flag, the brothers in arms of the whole world. Regardless of physical fitness, sports abilities, social conditions, ranks, gender or age, shoulder-to-shoulder, engaged in the principle of sport for all in just one goal: the world peace.
Last year, 23 countries returned the official report and 14 countries answered our inquiry of organization of a CISM Day Run event, totalizing 659.862 members of their Armed Forces having participating in multiple events, marking the CISM presence in the world. Unfortunately, we did not achieve the number of 750.000 participants, as it was previously planned but the numbers were quite impressive. Congratulations to the delegations of Finland and Pakistan, the only member nations that have organized a CISM Day Run event in their countries since the beginning of the project.
