49th WMC Shooting – Doha (QAT) – Competition Day 5 & 6 & Closing Ceremony

 

 

DOHA (QAT) – The last two days of competition of the 49th WMC Shooting took place on November 18 and 19 in the Losail Shooting Sports Complex in Doha (QAT) after 6 days of high-level competition.

On November 18, Qatar won two more medals at the 49th CISM World Military Shooting Championship in the 25m Military Rapid Fire Pistol Men Team Event and in the Skeet Women Team Event. The Qatari shooters Oleg Engachev, Ivan Bidniak and Konstantin Maltsev finished with a score of 1737 and grabbed the silver medal while the Chinese team composed by Zheng Gao, Zhenxiang Xie and Yongde Jin won the gold medal with a total score of 1755-62x. Russia (Klimov, Kalyuzhnayy & Guryanov) took the bronze medal (1730-51x). In the women’s competition, the Qatari trio of Sarah Mohamed, Hajar Mohamed and Reem al-Sharshani, who previously won the skeet event at the Asian Shotgun Championship in Abu Dhabi, enabled the host country to take the bronze medal with a total score of 200. Russia (Belikova, Krakhmaleva & Meleshchenko) realized a massive performance (206) to win the gold medal and even broke the CISM World Record at the same time. China (Zhang, Che & Zhou - 204) finished on the second step of the podium.

 

 

In the other events of the day, Russia went on dominating the women’s skeet individual by winning two medals. After winning the gold medal in the skeet team event, Marina Belikova managed to take the first place of the skeet individual event by defeating Simona Scocchetti (ITA) 13-12. Her teammate Anastasiia Krakhmaleva was awarded the bronze medal as she won her 3rd place game against the German shooter Christine Wenzel. In the same time, the Russian gold medalist Marina Belikova set a new CISM Record in the Skeet Women Event by shooting 72 targets (the previous record was set in Korea 2015 with 70 targets).

 

 

China won the Skeet Men Team event as Xu, Wang & Zhang broke the CISM World Record (364), just two points ahead of the Russian silver medalists Skorobogatov, Zemlin and Astakhov (362). The Finland team composed by Kossi, Aspholm and Peltonen had to make do with the bronze medal (356).

In the 50m Rifle 3 Positions 3x20 Women Individual Event, the Korean Shooter Song Hee Bae won the gold medal with a total score of 587-30x, with a one and two-shots lead on the silver medalist Franziska Peer (AUT) and the bronze medalist Nizkoshapskaia (RUS). Norway took the gold in the 330m Rapid Fire for men, while Austria took silver and Denmark the bronze. 

 

 

Norway took the gold medal in the 300m Military Rapid Fire, Rifle 3x20 team event with Lund, Brekkne and Wear (1713-52x, new CISM World Record) while the Austrian team (1683-26x) composed of Schmirl, Pickl and Rumpler  and the Danish team (Jepsen, Aagaard & Olsen – 1669-38x) respectively took the silver and the bronze medal.

Finally, Germany (Skeries, Vennenkamp & Hornung) grabbed the gold medal of the 25m Military Rapid Fire Pistol Women’s Team event with a total score of 1730-54x, followed by Mongolia (Tumurchudur, Gantumur & Otryad – 1716-48x) and Russia (Timofeva, Medvedeva & Paderina – 1715-60x) who finished on the second and third place of the podium.

 

 

On November 19, the Chinese team made a great impression by winning two gold medals in the individual men’s skeet event and in the 25m Military Rapid Fire Pistol men competition. In the individual men’s skeet event, Xu Ying realized a great performance with a perfect 16 in the gold medal game against the Czech shooter Jan Sychra, who finished fifth at the 2012 London Olympic Games, to claim the gold medal. Sychra lost the gold medal in the last four shots as he blanked out two of them. The bronze medal was awarded to Oskari Kossi who defeated Yang Wang (CHN).

China also dominated the men's 25m military rapid fire pistol podium by grabbing the two first steps thanks to Zhenxiang Xie who took the gold medal with a total of 591-25x while Yongde Jin finished on the second step of the podium (589-22x), just two points ahead of the winner. Fabrice Daumal won France’s first medal in this championship with the bronze medal (587-31x).

 

 

After winning the men's 300m military rapid fire, rifle 3X20 team event on Friday, Norway's Arne Odd Brekne and Aannestad Kim-Andre Lund grabbed the gold and bronze medals in the 300m Military Rapid Fire, Rifle 3x20 Individual Event. Brekne performed a 576 total score, just two points ahead of Austria's Bernhard Pickl who claimed the silver medal with 574 points.

Finally, for the last competition of the day, Germany won another silver medal as Michelle Skeries grabbed the second place of the 25m Military Rapid Fire Pistol Individual Women’s event. Naphaswan Yangpaiboon (THA) won the gold medal after an impressive performance (583-18x) while Hyun Joo Park (KOR) took the bronze medal (580-16x).

 

 

The last competitions were followed by the Awarding Ceremony and a wonderful Closing Ceremony which took place in the Lusail Shooting Sports Complex in presence of the CISM President, Colonel AbdulHakeem Alshino (BRN), Major Jon Kirknes, CISM OCR, Colonel Bruno Wolfensberger CISM Shooting PCSC, HE Lieutenant-General (Pilot) Ghanembin Shaheen Al-Ghanem (QAT), Chief of Staff of the Qatar Armed Forces, HE Major General Dahlan Jamaan Al Hamad (QAT), President of the Qatar Military Sport Association, high authorities of the Qatari Armed Forces, ISSF representatives, CISM Chiefs of Mission and the participants.

In in speech, Major-General Dahlan Jamaan al Hamad thanked the Emir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani for his support towards the sports’ development in Qatar: "Qatar can count on a leadership which supports sport. We are proud to have successfully organized this event who was ruled under the CISM motto “Friendship Through Sport”. Military participants gathered during 6 days to compete in the same place in a peace and harmonic atmosphere that could only have been achieved through sport”.

 

 

"I wish all the participants a safe trip back home and we hope to see them soon in our country", added Hamad, who is also the president of the Qatar Athletic Federation (QAF) said.

Katrin Quooss, the German shooter who won the women trap event declared: “It's been a few days of fun here in Doha. I enjoyed the competition and the WMC was really well organized. I look forward to returning here soon”.

As the CISM Anthem was played, the CISM Flag and Qatar Flag were lowered, HE Lieutenant-General (Pilot) Ghanembin Shaheen Al-Ghanem (QAT), Chief of Staff of the Qatar Armed Forces, declared the 49th edition of the World Military Shooting Championship closed.
