49th WMC Shooting – Doha (QAT) – Competition Day 1 and already three new CISM World Records!

DOHA (QAT) – The first day of competition of the 49th edition of the WMC Shooting took place today in the magnificent Lusail Shooting Sports Complex located in Doha (QAT) with the following events: the 25m Centre Fire Pistol Men, the 25m Pistol Women, the 300m Standard Rifle 3x20m Men, the 50m Rifle 60 Prone Women, the Shotgun Trap Men and the Shotgun Trap Women.

And we can clearly say that it will be a high level championship! “With approximately 750 participants, it’s one of the largest WMC in the CISM history in the last 5 years. Shooting is kind of mandatory in all the armies! ”, declared Colonel Bruno Wolfensberger, CISM Shooting PCSC. “Moreover, I would like to add that 60% of the athletes present here are competing in the civilian competitions. Some of our athletes also participated in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games”.

Indeed, with more than 15 athletes who participated recently in the OG, there is no doubt that this WMC is really close to the top level events. Two Olympic medalists and two Olympic Records holders will compete in the CISM Event this year: CPL Sylwia Bogacka (POL), silver medalist in the London 2012 OG in the 10m Air Rifle Event, OR - 1 Jean Quiquampoix (FRA), silver medalist in the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men Event at the Rio 2016 OG, CPT Alexey Klimov (RUS), Olympic Record at the OG London 2012 (592) in the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men and HF Löw Andreas (GER), Olympic Record at the OG Rio 2016 (140) in Double Trap Men.

At the end of this first day of competition, 5 CISM World Records have been broken: SGT Odd Arne Brekne (NOR) broke his own 2015 CISM World Record with a total score of 588-23x during the relay 1 of the 300m Standard Rifle 3x20m, CPT Yong Bok Kim did the same in the Trap Women Qualification with a total of 73, then at the 50m range the Korean shooter So Hee Bae set a new CISM World record with 625,5 pts, China (Wan, Yin & Gao) and Germany (Müller, Beer, Rachl) both broke the CISM World Record in the 50m Rifle 60 Prone Women Team Event with a total of 1861,0 points while Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (Kim, Pak, Yang) is the new holder of the CISM World Record in the Trap Women Team event with a total of 213 points!

One of the consequences of these records broken early in the WMC is that the Anti-Doping Committee, headed by Dr. Fatma Khamis Al-Malki had to gather to talk about the situation and check if they would have enough tests until the end of the Championships. Indeed, every new World Record holder has to be tested for drugs! “This Committee is essential to the smooth progress of the WMC. They are working in the shadow, but I really want to thank them for their support and hard work!”, declared Colonel Bruno Wolfensberger.

In the Trap Women Team Event, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (Kim, Pak & Yang) took the gold medal ahead of China (Wang J., Wang X. & Wang Y.) and the host country Qatar (Al-Abdulla, Al-Khalaf & Haji) while the German shooter Katrin Quooss managed to become Military World Champion after defeating Jinglin Wang (CHN) in the final of the Trap Women Event. Yajun Wang (CHN) finished on the third step of the podium. In the 50m Rifle 60 Prone Women Team event, China (Wan, Yin & Gao) took the first place of the competition ahead of Germany (Müller, Beer & Rachl). Both teams finished with the same total of points but China managed to take the gold medal thanks to a better result in the last series! Korea took the bronze medal thanks to Bae S.H., Bae So. H. & Kim.
